Teaching Philosophy
Cheyenne’s teaching philosophy is to recognize that each student is unique and her role in their education is to assist them in reaching their potential by determining their learning styles and to tailor her lessons to maximize their learning potential. By determining Cheyenne’s student’s learning style(s), her students can also apply their newfound learning style(s) to other areas of their education which would assist in their overall academic success. Due to Cheyenne’s past performance issues and experiences as a horn player, the majority of her teachers only had one way of teaching horn which had no positive impact on the issues and concerns related to Cheyenne’s playing. This has led her to learn how to discover multiple different solutions for her playing issues independently. Cheyenne’s aim is to pass this skill set to her students so they have the tools for success as musicians which is comprised of their performance, music history and music theory knowledge.
In order to enhance a horn student’s performance, Cheyenne will assist in the student’s development of their overall technique and sound concept and apply these concepts to situations found in different repertoire. Development of overall technique would include exercises consisted of scales, arpeggios and a mix of the two. In addition to those items, techniques such as stopped horn, lip trills, lip bends, etc. would be added later as the student grows as a musician. In order to improve the student’s theory knowledge, Cheyenne would incorporate music theory concepts in their exercises to assist in their understanding of how music is composed and assist them in finding patterns that are commonly found in music. In order to enhance the student’s history knowledge, Cheyenne would incorporate music and general historical concepts in the student’s repertoire which would also inform the student of the various styles in their repertoire.
